The term for censorship can be traced to Rome to 443 B.C. since then government have been trying to breed the ideal character from the people, by limit the amount a violence their citizen see. In 1896 the first film was made called, “Arrival of a train” which features a train arriving to the station and the passengers boarding it. Only after 1920 was the public concerned with the film industry’s morals, when Hollywood was plagued with major scandals. The Virginia Rappe rape case is considered to be the first major scandal, and lead to, the accused of rape, Roscoe Arbuckle’s films to be banned temporarily for a year, since he was found to be uninvolved with the incident and no evidence of rape ever occurring. In 1922 the Motion Picture Production Code, inaccurately known as Hays Code, was born, the Code detailed what content was forbidden; from nudity and references to homosexuality to disrespect for the American flag. The Hays Code continued until 1966 when the MPAA(Motion Picture Association of America) enforced the rating system: such as, rated R, rated G, etc.
